PRIVATE AND OFFICIAL RECEPTIONS

One of the important events during Christmas in Europe is the meeting which the participants expect with the town’s officials and then with the town’s people during the inaugural parade which follows.

Here again Dr Alfonso Benvenuto and his team showed their skills. The majority of members of the AEHT’s Managing Committee were present in Senigallia, so the mayor and senator Ms Luana Angeloni invited them to a private reception in Senigallia’s venerable town hall. It was the occasion for Alfonso to proudly present his friends in the Managing Committee, as well as Christiane Keller , ‘Mrs Christmas’.

In her short welcoming speech (translated by Ms Maria Luisa Donati) , the mayor informed the managing committee that Senigallia was twinned with Sens (France), Chester (United Kingdom) and Lörrach (Germany) and that the town had been awarded, for the seventh time, the EU’s ‘blue flag’ in recognition of its efforts to improve the environment. She also emphasised the dynamism of the town’s schools, including the A.Panzini school, and wished the managing committee an excellent stay in Senigallia, inviting them to return in 2004 to enjoy the exhibition on the Della Rovere family and its masterpieces, including the famous ‘Madonna of Senigallia’. Finally she proudly presented to each member a reproduction of the famous painting together with a book on Senigallia as a souvenir.

THE OFFICIAL RECEPTION

A little later, this time in the magnificent Council Chamber, took place the official welcome of the delegations. This was another high-point in the proceedings, as the delegations entered the chamber, with their bright costumes perfectly illustrating the rich diversity of the Europe’s regions represented by their young people. For Ms Luana Angeloni, the mayor and senator, flanked by Christiane Keller and Alfonso Benvenuto, it was an obvious pleasure to welcome officially the delegations to her beautiful town of Senigallia. And Christiane Keller, after recounting the various stages of the evolution of Christmas in Europe, expressed her great joy and emotion at being present in Senigallia for this 12th edition of the event.

In her speech to the assembled delegations Ms Luana Angeloni emphasised the opportunities offered by Christmas in Europe to learn how others live: ‘There are no frontiers, just people. I warmly greet all the delegations and urge them to build the future of Europe’, she concluded, thanking Alfonso Benvenuto for all his efforts. ‘I declare open the 12th Christmas in Europe, and I wish you all a Happy Christmas’. With this sentence Ms Luana Angeloni gave the starting signal for the event, while outside the trumpeters were already lined up and making themselves heard!
