TO THE HEART OF THE ISLAND IN SEVEN STAGES

The organisers from the Ametikool in Kuressaare, which is the capitol of the island of Saaremaa, had the courage to prepare for their visitors a touristic excursion around their island. So boarding the two buses, this plan is set in motion..

Seven stages were promised for this voyage of discovery. With the bonus of dry weather and some occasional sun the excursionists approached the Kaali meteor craters, formed by falling meteorites. On the most important of these, a small lake – ice covered, some delightful swoops and slides were accomplished.

Further on, ‘Karja Kirik’, a church dedicated to St Nicholas where the Pastor, the Reverend Veikko Vihuti guided the visitors with great warmth and conviction.

Then ‘Angla tuulikud’ also called the famous windmills of Saarmaa. There are only a few remaining and one well preserved example. We used the occasion to take a family photo……

The excursionist were equally interested in video film peopled by legends.

The 5th stage given over to the farm museum, "Mihkli talumuuseum" again made an interesting stop. We were able to admire the ancient farm with its well-used work implements.

Lunch was served at "Viljaait", a typical farm building rented for this purpose, providing a much needed rest for all. The fireplace and hanging grasses and farm tools created a very warm ambience. It goes without saying that the guides and the teachers who prepared our meal – a delicious soup – were the height of graciousness.

Last stage: We return to Kuressaare to the Kalev Chocolate Factory, one of the sponsor of our event. After listening to the instruction of the technician, nothing could be simpler than to make our very own chocolate.

In total, a lovely excursion, well organised allowed us to discover many facets of this enchanting island and to interest us in returning to discover more. And one mention in particular for those two guides who filled the kilometres thanks to the games and contests they brought with them.
